Simone and Roberto started working together in a restaurant in London in 2006. Simone finished 6th at the UK Barista Championship in 2010, then moved to Guatemala to work with a coffee exporting company and judge barista competitions across Central America.
He took 2nd place at the Italian Coffee Cupping Competition in 2012. Roberto, who grew up in his family's coffee shop in Verona, was running his own coffee and wine bar there before they reunited in London.
Together they launched 80 Stone in Croydon in 2012. Their about page opens with the line: 'We're not cool.
But our coffee is.' It is the kind of self-aware positioning that either lands or falls flat depending on whether the coffee backs it up. Their sourcing goes through importers who work to social responsibility and sustainability standards.
They supply wholesale to cafes and restaurants, offer barista training, and stock La Marzocco equipment.
