Founded in 2011 by David Abrahamovitch and Kaz James, Grind began as a single café in Shoreditch, East London, before evolving into a distinctive coffee brand that bridges traditional café culture with modern sustainability practices. The company maintains its own roasting facility in London, where they process coffee for their retail locations and direct-to-consumer products.

Grind has positioned itself at the forefront of sustainable coffee innovation, notably becoming the first UK company to offer certified home-compostable coffee pods. Their capsules, made from organic PHA (polyhydroxyalkanoate), contain no plastic or aluminium, addressing a significant environmental concern in the coffee industry. The company sources its beans ethically from sustainable farms worldwide and delivers all orders carbon-positive.

Their business model has successfully adapted to changing market conditions, particularly during the pandemic, when they pivoted from a predominantly café-based operation to include a substantial direct-to-consumer offering. This transformation has enabled them to expand beyond their London roots while maintaining their commitment to quality and sustainability.

The brand’s distinctive millennial pink packaging and contemporary aesthetic have helped establish a strong identity in the competitive coffee market. Their roasting operation focuses on creating consistent, specialty-grade coffee for both their café network and home consumption range.

Through their Better Coffee Foundation, Grind has implemented transparent ocean plastic recovery initiatives and various sustainability programmes. The company now employs over 300 people and has evolved from its East London origins to become a significant player in the UK’s specialty coffee sector, with plans for international expansion.
