Redemption Roasters is a London coffee company with a social mission at its core: training people leaving prison with barista and roastery skills, and employing them through its cafés and production sites. Co-founders Ted and Max launched the business in 2016 after the Ministry of Justice approached them about putting a roastery inside a prison.
The first roaster was installed at HMYOI Aylesbury in 2016, and the first barista graduate, Talib, joined the team at the opening shop on Lamb's Conduit Street in Bloomsbury in 2017. The roastery later moved to HMP The Mount, where a Loring roaster now produces the company's coffee.
A barista academy programme runs in partnership with Milton Keynes College. Redemption now has twelve cafés across London, including Covent Garden, King's Cross, Victoria, Holborn, and Piccadilly, alongside a webshop, subscriptions, and a Nespresso-compatible pod range.
Origins on the menu include Brazil, Colombia, Rwanda, Uganda, Peru, and South Sudan, with named producer partners and single-origin lots.
