Simone and Roberto met working in a London restaurant in 2006 and launched 80 Stone in Croydon in 2012. Simone finished 6th at the UK Barista Championship in 2010, then spent time in Guatemala with a coffee exporting company before taking 2nd place at the Italian Coffee Cupping Competition in 2012.
Roberto grew up in his family's coffee shop in Verona and ran his own coffee and wine bar there before they reunited in London. The roastery sits on the Silver Wing Industrial Estate and runs a 30kg Petroncini alongside a 1960s 5kg F.I.M.T. for small batches.
They source most beans themselves through direct relationships with producers including COMSA in Honduras and Sancoffee in Brazil, with a stated focus on social responsibility and supporting female producers. Wholesale customers get barista training, shop audits and tasting sessions, with La Marzocco supplied as the espresso machine partner.
Their about page opens with 'We're not cool. But our coffee is.'
