Nelson Coffee Roasters was founded in Eastbourne, East Sussex in 2014 by Lucy and Ben after a honeymoon visit to a specialty coffee shop in Nelson, British Columbia. The name honours that moment.
They ran a café only for the first six years and added roasting in 2020, drawing on over 14 years of combined specialty coffee experience. The café and roastery share a site at 15 Station Parade in Eastbourne town centre, open seven days a week and a short walk from the train station.
The team roasts ethically sourced, high-grade and seasonal coffee, working with named lots from Brazil, Ethiopia, Rwanda and Peru, including Baixao da Serra, Karambi, Kanya Lot 19 and Taferi Kela. Roasts are pitched light to medium for filter and espresso, alongside the Bear Blend.
Coffee is sold in-café, by national subscription and through wholesale to other cafés and restaurants. The business has been recommended in national newspapers and was named by Ash Barty as her favourite café in the world.
