Old Spike Roastery was founded in 2015 in Peckham by two childhood friends with a clear social mission: to train and employ people transitioning out of homelessness through a structured barista programme. Ten years on, the business roasts over 100 tonnes of coffee annually, operates 7 cafés across London, and has supported more than 350 individuals through the programme.
Their main café and roastery is at 54 Peckham Rye (SE15 4JR). Sixty-five percent of profits are directed toward their social and environmental goals.
One specific product, their Kinini coffee, is sourced from a Rwandan farm run exclusively by female farmers, with £1 from every bag going to The Connection charity supporting vulnerable women. Old Spike supplies wholesale, runs subscriptions and sells direct online.
Their sourcing is based on direct trade and seasonality, with prices paid to farmers at 4 to 5 times the Fairtrade minimum where quality allows.
