Pumphreys Coffee traces its origins to 1750, when Leigh Smith opened a coffee business in the Flesh Market in Newcastle, opposite the Bigg Market. The Pumphrey name entered the business through Thomas Pumphrey from 1854.
The roastery has been based at Blaydon on Tyne since 1983, where it operates a warehousing and roasting facility alongside a coffee showroom. Stuart Lee Archer took over as director in 2013, succeeding Malcolm Archer.
The company also runs Pumphreys Brewing Emporium inside Newcastle's Grainger Market for retail and tastings. Pumphreys won Best Espresso in the UK from the Beverage Standards Association in 2012 with a 5 Cup rating, followed by Best Cappuccino in the UK in 2013, retained through 2014.
The range covers single origins from Brazil, Ethiopia, Guatemala, Colombia, Kenya, Jamaica, Indonesia and Myanmar, alongside house blends and a wholesale offer. With nearly three centuries of trading history, Pumphreys is one of the longest-established coffee merchants in the UK.
