Red Roaster has been roasting in Brighton's Kemptown since 2000, making it one of the longer-established specialty roasteries on the south coast. The roastery runs Diedrich machines and sources direct from farmers, focusing on coffee graded above SCAA 84.
Its work in Rwanda goes beyond buying beans: the team has helped build a school in Musenyi, set up a health post, and provided farm equipment and training to producers there. The roastery is organic and pays above Fairtrade pricing, though direct trade is the primary model.
The business runs cafes and a restaurant in Brighton alongside the roastery, with bottomless brunch, dinner and private hire on the food side. The roastery team of around 20 to 25 includes a partnership with Team Domenica, a Brighton charity supporting young adults with learning disabilities.
Wholesale, online retail and free local delivery in Brighton and Hove are all part of the operation.
