Campbell & Syme was founded in 2012 by Joe Syme after a trip to Portland, Oregon, where the city's coffee scene, and Stumptown Coffee Roasters in particular, made a strong impression. Joe began roasting at home and selling at farmers' markets before opening a flagship cafe at 9 Fortis Green in East Finchley, north London.
The cafe doubled as the original roastery and ran public cuppings and workshops. Bara and Ben both joined through that cafe and are now co-owners alongside Joe.
Roasting moved in 2018 to a dedicated unit in Kings Langley, Hertfordshire, growing from a 15kg Giesen to a 12kg Diedrich and, in February 2025, an IMF RM20 hot air roaster with integrated low emissions system. Solar panels installed in 2022 cover most of the roastery's electricity in the warmer months.
Green coffee is bought through direct trade. The team supports World Coffee Research, Project Waterfall, Rewilding Britain, 1% for the Planet, and One Tree Planted.
Wholesale, subscriptions, and barista, brewing and cupping workshops are all part of the offer.
