Grumpy Mule is an independent coffee roaster based in Meltham, Yorkshire, roasting since 2006 and now part of the Cafédirect Group. The roastery works with high-altitude growers across origins including Colombia, Honduras, Sumatra and Peru, with around 72% of the coffee bought certified organic by the Soil Association, alongside Fairtrade certification.

Sourcing is built on a long-running partnership with Producers Direct, a farmer-led non-profit that channels funding, training and technology back to growing communities. The range covers single origins, blends and an organic decaf, sold direct via subscription and stocked in Waitrose, Ocado, Whole Foods, Booths and Suma.

As a B Corp, the business has signed up to the Science Based Targets initiative, with goals of a 50% emissions cut by 2030 and net zero by 2040. Around 99% of packaging is now recyclable, and recent coffees have picked up Great Taste Awards in 2022 and 2023.

The strapline reads: sourced shrewdly, roasted respectfully, drunk repeatedly.
