North Yorkshire has 8 independent coffee roasters spread across the county, from York city centre and the converted carriage houses of Malton to the converted cowsheds of the Whitby coast and the granaries of East Rounton. The county manages an unusual age range. Pollards in Yorkshire dates its founding to 1879; several other roasters here started after 2010. Both ends are still going.
Pollards Coffee claims a founding date of 1879, making it one of the oldest operating coffee roasters in Yorkshire and home to traditional flame roasting on open drum roasters dating back over 80 years. Roost operates from Talbot Yard in Malton, a food and drink destination housed in an 18th century Grade II listed carriage house; founders David and Ruth sold their Lincolnshire home in 2011 specifically to build something in specialty coffee. Source Climate Coffee was founded by Cristina Talens, who spent over fifteen years working in ethical trade, sustainability and rainforest protection (including consulting work for the UN and time at Antislavery International) before starting the roastery.
York is the easiest visitor stop, with York Coffee Emporium and Source Climate within reach. Malton (Roost at Talbot Yard) and the coast (Baytown near Whitby) reward a longer drive into the Moors and Dales. Many North Yorkshire roasters supply farm shops, delis and the county's independent cafe scene alongside their online business.
Three roasters that illustrate the breadth of the local scene. Selected on editorial criteria, not commercial relationship. See our editorial standards for how we choose.
