Coffee roasters in West Yorkshire

West Yorkshire has 20 independent coffee roasters, with Leeds the centre of gravity and meaningful operations in Bradford, Huddersfield, Halifax and Castleford as well. The region punches above its weight on industry pedigree: more than its share of UK roasters here have judged at Cup of Excellence, hold Q Grader licences, or sit at the structural end of fair trade. The mill driven industrial heritage shows in how the roasters operate. Practical, considered, output focused.

Cafedirect, based in Meltham, is one of the most structurally distinctive coffee businesses in the UK: a social enterprise where the farmer cooperatives that supply the beans hold shares, sit on the Board, and receive a portion of profits. Dark Woods Coffee was founded in 2014 by three people with deep industry CVs, including a roaster who has judged at Cup of Excellence and Best of Panama, giving the business access to micro lots most UK roasters never see. North Star Roast, in Leeds, was co founded with a green coffee buyer who is a licensed Q Grader and has served on the international Cup of Excellence jury.

Leeds has the highest density and the easiest day out for visitors. Bradford (Bean Brothers in a former textile mill at Britannia Mills), Halifax (White Rose, carrying the Made in Yorkshire mark) and Castleford are worth detouring for. Several West Yorkshire roasters supply nationally and you will find their beans on cafe menus far beyond the county.
