Hampshire has 12 independent coffee roasters, with Winchester quietly the centre of the scene and meaningful operations in Southampton, Portsmouth, the New Forest fringe and Hayling Island. The county manages an unusual age range. ANVIL has been roasting since 1982 from a Hampshire industrial estate it calls The Forge, while Blue Hour was founded by the 2025 UK Latte Art Champion and is barely a few years old. Both work within an hour of each other.
ANVIL Coffee Roasters has been operating since 1982 with multiple Great Taste Awards across the years, the kind of pedigree that comes from staying with one location and one craft for four decades. Blue Hour Coffee, in Winchester, is the opposite end of the timeline: founded by Ben (2025 UK Latte Art Champion, top ten at the World Championship) and Nick (winner of the Kaffeine Latte Art Smackdown in London), the business operates from Hampshire Pantry and supplies wholesale across the county. Hayling Island Coffee Society is a different angle again. Owner roaster Alicia Hewitt grew up in El Salvador and has built the roastery around Central and South American coffee, particularly from El Salvador, with the kind of producer side knowledge no roaster trained in the UK can replicate.
Winchester is the easiest visitor stop, with three of Hampshire's roasters in or near the city (Blue Hour at Hampshire Pantry, Winchester Coffee Roasters at Sun Valley Business Park, and The Roasting Party). Lymington (Coffee Mongers), the New Forest fringe (Red Garage), Waterlooville (All About The Grind) and Hayling Island add reach for a longer day or weekend.
Three roasters that illustrate the breadth of the local scene. Selected on editorial criteria, not commercial relationship. See our editorial standards for how we choose.
