Kent has 15 independent coffee roasters, the highest concentration in the south east outside London. The geography is distinctive: a strong cluster on the north Kent coast around Whitstable and Broadstairs, another around Canterbury and the Stour valley, and outliers in Sevenoaks, Sittingbourne and Rochester. Kent's roasting scene has a depth that newer county scenes lack, with roasters here founded as early as the 1920s still operating today.
Herbert and Ward, in Rochester, was established in 1929 by two men who met in India in 1920 and spent the following decade buying coffee, tea and spices across Africa, India and South East Asia; the business is now in its fourth generation of family ownership. Imperial Jade Coffee takes the opposite approach: founded after a 2018 trip exposed its founder to Yunnan coffee, the roastery sources exclusively from Yunnan province in China, a region almost entirely absent from the UK market. Eighty Seven Plus, in Whitstable, makes the SCA scoring threshold its identity. Every coffee they roast scores 87 or above.
Visitor access varies. Whitstable, Broadstairs (Curve Coffee) and Margate are densest on the coast. Canterbury and Sevenoaks are the inland hubs. Many Kent roasters have cafes open to the public alongside online and wholesale operations.
