Microroastery was started by Nick and Erika, who began roasting in their garden shed in 2011 with a 2kg machine before opening a coffee shop in Canterbury in 2013. The couple traded from Whitstable seafront in the early days before settling in the city centre at 4 St Margaret's Street, where the cafe still operates.

The roastery has since moved to Aylesham, just outside Canterbury, and upgraded to a 5kg roaster, with Nick listed as master roaster. The original small machine remains on display upstairs in the Canterbury shop, and the cafe sells freshly roasted coffee from the Aylesham site.

Single origins on the menu draw from Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia and Peru, including a Peruvian Nispero marked organic, and the seasonal decaf is a 100% organic Mexican coffee. Wholesale is offered to like-minded partners with training and ongoing support, and the business runs subscriptions through its online shop.
