Markus Coffee opened at 13 Connaught Street, London, in 1957 and has traded continuously from the same address ever since. The shop was founded by George and Eva Markus, Hungarian Holocaust survivors who fled Budapest after the 1956 uprising, and George had previously run a coffee bean shop in Budapest before the Communist takeover.
Roasting still happens on the premises daily, and the shop carries 34 varieties of beans from 13 countries, including Jamaica Blue Mountain, Blue Sumatra, Brazilian Santos and Colombian. The Colombian beans are also used for the shop's decaffeinated and decaffeinated dark coffees, both processed using the Swiss Water Process.
Ownership has long since passed to Mr Sarwar, who joined the founders in 1976. Markus supplies hotels, restaurants and private customers across London and beyond, with past and current clients including the Hard Rock Cafe, Carlton Towers and Victoria Casino.
The Regent and Negresco blend remains one of the shop's best-known signatures.
