Clifton Coffee Roasters was founded in Bristol in 2001 by James Fisher, who started out servicing espresso machines for the city's independent businesses. The business grew into wholesale coffee supply alongside barista training, and was later joined by partners Ed Buston, Emma Russe and Miles Lenthall.

The roastery operates from Island Trade Park in Avonmouth, on the outskirts of Bristol, and became a certified B Corporation in 2023. The team states that 90% of its coffee is bought directly from origin through its own relationships, with named producer partners including Fazenda Pinhal in Brazil, the Comucap Cooperative in Honduras, La Esperanza in Guatemala, Los Nogales in Colombia and growers in the Arbegona area of Ethiopia's Sidama zone.

Several of the multi-site Bristol businesses that joined as wholesale customers in the early years remain on the books today. Sugarcane (EA) decaf is offered alongside the core range.
