Mocha Mondo started in 2010 serving coffee to commuters and travellers at Alnmouth railway station in Northumberland. The business became a limited company in 2013 and began roasting its own beans, then expanded with a takeaway and roastery at Amble Harbour Village before launching mail order in July 2017.
The roasting operation now runs from a purpose-built facility at Coquet Enterprise Park in Amble, with a team of eight. Coffees are single origin, sourced from producing countries around the world, and the line-up draws on lots from El Salvador, Peru, Colombia, Ethiopia and Brazil.
Sustainability shows up in the cafe operation rather than wholesale claims: fully compostable paper cups, PLA cup lids, CPLA biodegradable cups, oxo-biodegradable straws and wooden stirrers, with the business stating it is working to minimise plastic waste. Subscriptions and wholesale are both offered alongside the retail roastery and shop, which is open to visitors at the Amble Harbour Village site.
