Northern Ireland (beyond Belfast and the named counties) has 3 independent coffee roasters with very different positions. Johnsons Coffee has a history spanning more than a century: the Johnson family sold fine groceries from carts in the 1890s before transitioning to coffee importing and roasting in the early twentieth century, and it remains a Belfast based operation. Sleeper Coffee was founded in April 2020 in Castlewellan, with plans for a coffee shop alongside the roastery. Pure Roast Coffee operates as a private label and contract manufacturer rather than a consumer specialty roaster.
Northern Ireland's coffee scene has expanded rapidly across all six counties. The roasters here supply local hospitality and online customers across the British Isles.
