Cardiff has 3 independent coffee roasters, anchored around the city centre and Cardiff Bay. For a city of its size that is a genuine specialty scene rather than a token presence: between them, Cardiff's roasters cover a husband and wife operation sourcing from origins almost no other UK roaster touches, a brothers' arcade roastery, and a brand built on a distinctly Welsh sense of humour.
Quantum Coffee Roasters has been in Cardiff Bay since 2015, run by Katia and Dimitri, with a second site opposite Cardiff Castle from 2023. Their origin list is unusual for the UK: Jamaica, Hawaii, the Philippines, Yemen, Ecuador, Australia. Most British roasters do not go near those markets. Uncommon Ground has been in the Royal Arcade since March 2015, run by brothers Paul and Ian Hayman, and operates a zero waste delivery system for trade customers. Hard Lines Coffee runs cafes plus online and wholesale, and stands apart for its tone: Welsh language adjacent branding, with the Iechyd Da glass as one example, and copy that is self aware in a way few other UK roasters bother with.
The city centre and Cardiff Bay both have roastery cafes within walking distance of the main rail and waterfront stops. South Wales as a whole has only a handful of commercial roasters. Cardiff has three of them.
Three roasters that illustrate the breadth of the local scene. Selected on editorial criteria, not commercial relationship. See our editorial standards for how we choose.
