Devon has 8 independent coffee roasters spread across the county, with Exeter the largest cluster and operations reaching out to Dartmoor (Voyager), the south coast (Spiller & Tait at Budleigh Salterton), and the Devon and Dorset border (The Coffee Factory). The mix is heavier on technical and methodical operations than the average UK county. Two of the founders trained in adjacent technical fields before turning to coffee, and one of the roasters is built around a restored 1950s drum.
Owens Coffee, in Endsleigh near Ivybridge, has been roasting since 2010 and describes itself as Devon's first dedicated organic coffee roaster; founder Lorraine came from a biotech background and applied a methodical, iterative approach to learning the roasting process, including farm visits and extensive cupping. The Coffee Factory operates on the Devon and Dorset border, with head roaster Danny working on a 22kg 1950s Probat UG roaster called Dorothy that has been restored and fitted with modern additions. Crankhouse Coffee launched in 2014 in Exeter, beginning in a single car garage before moving through a converted barn on the edge of Dartmoor and now operating from near Exeter Airport, with a focus on light roast specialty, direct trade, and the science of the roast.
Exeter has the highest visitor density (Crankhouse, plus several roaster supplied cafes in the city). Dartmoor (Voyager), the south coast (Spiller & Tait at Budleigh Salterton, Crema the Crop in Axminster) and the rural west reward a longer route. Many Devon roasters supply the county's extensive holiday accommodation trade alongside their direct online business.
Three roasters that illustrate the breadth of the local scene. Selected on editorial criteria, not commercial relationship. See our editorial standards for how we choose.
