Perthshire's roasters split between Perth itself and the rural north of the county. The Bean Shop has been on George Street in Perth since 2003, Unorthodox Roasters is on the High Street in Kinross, and Glen Lyon and Birdie Coffee both roast further out, at Aberfeldy and Alyth. Glen Lyon and The Bean Shop both started somewhere improvised and are both still going. Glen Lyon began on a 5kg roaster in a bothy next to Fiona Grant's house, and The Bean Shop in the basement of its own shop on a 5kg Probat.
Fiona Grant founded Glen Lyon in 2011 and moved it to Aberfeldy Business Park in 2014. The Bean Shop was founded in 2003 by John and Lorna Bruce and has sold online since 2004. Birdie Coffee grew out of its founder's first encounter with fresh coffee while travelling in Papua New Guinea, and the experiments with stovetop roasting that followed. Unorthodox Roasters has run from the High Street in Kinross since 2016, with an online store alongside the shop.
