Wiltshire has 7 independent coffee roasters spread across the county, anchored by Hilperton (Dusty Ape), Edington (Square Root) and pockets across rural Wiltshire. The county is unusual on founder backgrounds: two of its roasters were started by British Army veterans (one with PTSD recovery as part of the founding story), and another is the UK's only roastery sourcing exclusively from women producers.
Flat Cap Coffee Roasting Company was founded in 2018 by Mark and Alex, a husband and wife team. Mark served in the British Army for 23 years before being discharged with PTSD; the business grew from time spent in coffee shops during a difficult period of readjustment, eventually leading to home roasting and then a commercial operation. Girls Who Grind Coffee is an all female speciality coffee roastery founded in 2017 by Casey LaLonde, originally from upstate New York and based in the UK since 2009; the business operates on a single sourcing principle, every coffee in the range comes from a woman producer, as the entire buying policy rather than a seasonal range. Blue Goose Coffee built its business around compostable Nespresso compatible pods and holds multiple awards including a Which? Best Buy, Great Taste Awards, World Coffee Innovation Awards 2023, and the Soil Association BOOM Award for Best New Organic Product.
Wiltshire roasters tend toward online, wholesale and rural retail rather than urban cafe presence. Hilperton (Dusty Ape) has a walk in roastery and bar; the other roasters here are more commonly found at farm shops, delis and online than on the high street.
Three roasters that illustrate the breadth of the local scene. Selected on editorial criteria, not commercial relationship. See our editorial standards for how we choose.
