Aberdeenshire has 5 independent coffee roasters, with Aberdeen city the centre of gravity (Figment, MacBeans, Morning Dog) and the rural Cairngorm side bringing distinctive setting (Roaring Stag in Royal Deeside, Bennachie at Banchory). The region is unusual on founder backgrounds: an oil and gas leaver, a former British Army officer, and a Sydney specialty trained roaster all founded businesses here within five years of each other.
MacBeans Coffee has been roasting coffee and selling tea from Aberdeen since 1989, making it one of the longer established independents in Scotland; the city centre shop is open seven days a week and carries a notably wide range. Roaring Stag Coffee operates from Ballater Business Park in Royal Deeside in the Cairngorm Mountains, run by Ruaridh, who left the British Army after 14 years of service to establish the roastery in 2015. Figment Coffee was founded in Aberdeen in 2017 by Neil Glover, who left a career in oil and gas after an encounter with speciality coffee prompted a change of direction; the business now runs a roastery and multiple café locations in Aberdeen.
Aberdeen city is the easiest visitor stop, with MacBeans (city centre), Figment cafés and Morning Dog accessible in a single day. Royal Deeside (Roaring Stag) and Banchory (Bennachie) reward a longer drive into the Cairngorms.
