Belfast has 8 independent coffee roasters, making it one of the strongest specialty coffee cities per capita in the UK and Ireland. The scene is young (most current roasters were founded after 2010) but ambitious in a way that punches above the city's size. The island of Ireland's first SCA accredited training campus is here. So is a Roastful top 50 worldwide name. So is a roaster founded by a multiple Irish brewing champion.
Bailies Coffee Roasters, on Stockmans Way, runs the island of Ireland's first SCA accredited training campus alongside its roastery, with direct trade sourcing and an in house coffee lab. Lucid Coffee Roasters was founded in 2021 by Stephen Houston, whose competition record runs to multiple Irish championship wins (Brewers Cup 2017 and 2019, AeroPress Championship 2019) plus podium places at Irish and World Cup Tasters and Brewers Cup events. Root and Branch was Belfast's first micro roastery when it opened in 2016 from the Portview Trade Centre, and has since been named among the world's top 50 coffee roasters by Roastful, focusing on seasonal single origin coffees through direct trade.
Belfast is compact enough that most of the roasters here can be visited in a morning. The Cathedral Quarter (Established Coffee), Stockmans Way and the city centre cluster around the river. The community is close knit and most roasters welcome cupping sessions and tastings if you ask.
Three roasters that illustrate the breadth of the local scene. Selected on editorial criteria, not commercial relationship. See our editorial standards for how we choose.
