Cheshire has 7 independent coffee roasters spread across the county, anchored by Chester (Jaunty Goat), Macclesfield (The Little Coffee Roastery, in a Grade II listed silk mill), the Peak District edge (Kickback) and rural Tilston (Lost Barn at Old Hall Farm).
Lost Barn Coffee Roasters is based at Old Hall Farm in Tilston, Malpas, with a cafe and retail space open seven days a week on the farm site, drawing on a team with food and drink backgrounds in London and Melbourne. Kickback Coffee Roasting Co built itself around an outdoors and adventure identity on the edge of the Peak District: the founder started roasting in a popcorn maker, and the business has since grown to a team of forty plus four coffee shops with a cycling and trail running clientele. Jaunty Goat opened on Bridge Street in Chester in summer 2015, with a second entirely plant-based site following on Northgate Street in January 2019; the business pairs cafes with wholesale and online retail, partners with Rainforest Alliance, and moves wholesale coffee in reusable tins, with milk arriving in returnable glass bottles from Peckforton Farm Dairy.
Chester (Jaunty Goat) and Macclesfield (The Little Coffee Roastery) are the easiest urban stops. Tilston (Lost Barn at Old Hall Farm), Weaverham (Creation Coffee in a log cabin) and the Peak District fringe (Kickback) reward a country drive.
