Cumbria has 10 independent coffee roasters, drawn in part by the same quality of life that attracts everyone else to the Lake District. The roasters here cluster in three places. Kendal at the southern edge anchors the heritage end (Farrers in continuous trade since 1819, Penningtons running on solar power). Keswick (Darkhouse) and nearby Threlkeld (Carvetii) sit in the heart of the National Park. Carlisle (John Watt) and the rural east (bean miles in Wetheral) round out the geography.
Farrers Coffee was founded in 1819 in the market town of Kendal, making it one of the oldest continuously trading coffee roasters in the UK; for more than two centuries it has roasted from the same Lake District base, and some of its best known house blends are descended from original recipes refined across generations. Penningtons, also in Kendal, runs its roastery on solar power, with energy fed directly into the roasting process, alongside DR Wakefield sourcing and a more traditional approach to bean selection. Carvetii Coffee Roasters operates from Threlkeld, in the heart of the Lake District, and supplies the famous Tebay Services on the M6. A notable endorsement given Tebay's reputation for the best motorway food in the UK.
Cumbria roasters skew online and wholesale rather than running their own cafes, reflecting the county's geography. If you are visiting, Kendal (Farrers, Penningtons, Podda & Wren) is the easiest stop and pairs well with a southern Lakes itinerary. Keswick (Darkhouse, with Carvetii in nearby Threlkeld) sits in the heart of the National Park.
