South Yorkshire has 7 independent coffee roasters, with Sheffield the centre of gravity (six of the seven) and a single Doncaster operation. The Sheffield scene is unusually shaped by the city's industrial heritage: roasters here name themselves after forges and foundries, build their own roasting machines from Sheffield steel, and operate from converted industrial sites. The City of Steel runs through the local coffee identity in a way that does not happen in other UK cities.
Foundry Coffee Roasters operates from Cutlery Works, a multi award winning food hall in Neepsend, Sheffield; the business has been a Real Living Wage employer since 2018 and runs an exclusively single origin range with no blends. Frazer's Coffee Roasters was founded in Sheffield in 2014 in the city's old cutlery district; founder Frazer built his first roasting machine himself using Sheffield steel and his background in mechanics, having started in his back garden before outgrowing the setup. Smith Street Coffee was founded in Sheffield in 2014 by Trev (a barista and roaster) and Dave (a chef with a coffee obsession) following a trip to Melbourne, with the roastery now at Hope Works on Sussex Road; multiple coffees in the range have won Great Taste Awards and packaging is CO2 neutral.
Sheffield centre and Neepsend (Foundry at Cutlery Works) are the easiest visitor stops, with several roasters within walking distance. Doncaster (House Coffee) sits separately for those passing through. The Sheffield scene is dense for a city of its size and rewards a deliberate coffee day.
