Suffolk has 8 independent coffee roasters serving the county and beyond, with Halesworth (Freshpac, Due Fratelli), Bury St Edmunds (Butterworth & Son), Ipswich (Coffeelink) and rural Wilby (The Suffolk Coffee Company) the main centres. The east of England is not traditionally associated with coffee culture, but Suffolk's roasters have quietly built a solid reputation: two of them date back to 1979 and are still in family ownership today.
Freshpac was established in Halesworth in 1979 by Gerald and Queenie Salter and is now in its third generation, roasting all coffee in house at its Suffolk facility with over 40 single origins and blends and multiple Great Taste Awards. Coffeelink began in 2005 after an experimental roast in the family kitchen and has grown into a network of over 24 cafes and kiosks across Suffolk, including locations inside East of England Co op stores, all supplied from the Ipswich roastery handling 40 single origins. Paddy & Scott's built a notable direct trade operation centred on Mount Kenya, with a social impact programme that includes funding menstrual health supplies for young women in the region; the roaster temporarily rebranded to "Jessie & K" to back the campaign.
Visitor access varies. Bury St Edmunds (Butterworth & Son), Halesworth (Freshpac, Due Fratelli), and Ipswich (Coffeelink waterfront) are the easiest stops. Several Suffolk roasters supply local farm shops and delis alongside their direct online sales.
