Oxfordshire has 9 independent coffee roasters, with Oxford the centre of gravity and notable operations also in Henley-on-Thames, Abingdon and the South Oxfordshire farm country. The county punches above its size on industry credentials. Three of the nine are B Corp certified, one is the UK's first Certified Regenified roaster, and another runs employment programmes for people leaving prison.
Indigo Valley was founded in 2005 when Fairtrade certified specialty was rare in the UK and built its reputation on combining ethical sourcing with quality roasting; the team has since accumulated 13 Great Taste Awards and the business holds B Corp certification. New Ground Coffee is the most socially distinctive in the county: the B Corp roastery's stated purpose is creating employment and training opportunities for people leaving prison, working through its NewGround Foundation across the UK, with operations from a workshop and flagship cafe in OX3. Routes Coffee, also in Oxford, holds the distinction of being the UK's first Certified Regenified Coffee Roaster, a standard built around soil health, biodiversity and producer wellbeing; the founders' approach grew from a 30 country overland journey spent with farmers, roasters and distributors across Asia and beyond.
Most Oxfordshire roasters operate cafes alongside roasting. The city centre and Jericho area have multiple roaster run spaces within walking distance (Jericho Coffee Traders, Colombia Coffee Roasters, The Missing Bean). South Oxfordshire (Anonymous Coffee in Peppard Common, Horsebox in Brightwell-cum-Sotwell) extends the reach for a country drive.
