West Sussex has 14 independent coffee roasters spread across the county, from the coast at Littlehampton up to the market towns and villages of the South Downs and Wealden country. The mix is unusually varied. A decaf specialist that was first in Europe with single origin Swiss Water, a 1960s family roastery still in third generation hands, a B Corp running ten cafes across Sussex, and a string of newer specialty operations all share the territory.
Decadent Decaf Coffee Company, founded in 2014 and based a mile from the sea, was the first business in Europe to offer single origin Swiss Water Process decaf and remains entirely focused on decaffeinated coffee; the range is deliberately narrow. Kendricks, in Ferring, was founded in 1964 by Thalben Kendrick Loydell and is now run by his son Philip and grandson Rob, making it (by their own claim) the longest running family coffee roastery and tea blender in Sussex. Trading Post Coffee Roasters opened on Ship Street in Brighton in January 2017 and by 2024 had grown to ten coffee houses across Sussex. Family run, B Corp certified, with open view roasteries built into their cafe spaces.
Several West Sussex roasters have visitor spaces open to the public. The South Downs and the Sussex coast make for a good combined day out: a roastery visit, lunch on the coast, an afternoon walk on the Downs. The county sits at a useful midpoint between London and the south coast, which shows in how many of the roasters here run sizeable wholesale operations.
